Pelassa
Based in Montà d’Alba in Piemonte’s Roero region, the Pelassa family has always produced wine from their own vineyards. Mario founded the Pelassa winery in 1960 and has since devoted all his time and passion to work in the vineyards alongside his wife, Maria Teresa. They own land in the Roero area and in the Verduno commune of Barolo, (their 2011 Barolo won a Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards). In 2000 their sons Davide and Daniele took over the domain and modernised the winery. Today, they are swiftly gaining a reputation amongst Piemonte's best, with their wines are generating interest around the world, and can now be found on the wine lists of some of the best restaurants in Europe, America and Asia.
The Roero region is a sandy area of gentle rolling grassy dunes and hills, across the Tanaro river from the more steeply hilled Langhe region, which is the home to Barolo and Barbaresco. The one exception being the steep Valmaggiore ridge which rises like a beast out of the surrounding more gentle hills. The grapes here are the stand out white Arneis, and for the reds Barbera and Nebbiolo, (the same grape that is responsible for Barolo and Barbaresco), which produces the wonderful red Roero Riserva. Though less famous than the Langhe region which is home to the Barolo and Barbaresco of the world, wines of the Roero region are some of the hidden gems of Piemonte, mainly sold by passionate ambassadors who have fallen in love with the potential and value the Roero has to offer. Here, Nebbiolo is distinguished for producing red wines of elegance and finesse, aw well as being a tad cheaper than its cousins from across the river..!! Tuck in and enjoy.
