Feudo Montoni
The Feudo Montoni estate lies in the centre of Sicily in the DOC Contea di Sclafani. It has the oldest and highest Nero d'Avola vines in the world, and is run by the amazing Fabio Sireci, one of the best winemakers in Sicily,if not the whole of Italy. Due to the altitude of the estate, which ranges from 400m to 750m, and its remote positioning, the Montoni vineyards are uncontaminated and protected from any surrounding pollution. The wines are all certified organic from the 2014 vintage onwards. The position of the vineyards, the high altitude and the winds give a gradual maturation and ripening of the grapes allowing for well-balanced wines with concentration and a natural acidity. The wines are produced from old, unadulterated clones of Sicilian grape varieties grown for centuries in the Montoni vineyards. The mother vines contain the pure genetic code which is transferred to the young vines using an ancient grafting operation. The Scion (La Gemma) is extracted from the mother plant and after one year grafted in the young, wild vine. After another year unique “Montoni” vines are produced. Tradition and technology are embraced in the cellar. The grapes are hand harvested, fermented with natural yeasts at controlled temperatures. Red wines are not fined or filtered. Minimal intervention to respect the biodynamic methods ensures that the typical Sicilian character shows in the wine. The single vineyard limited production Cru Vrucara is hailed by many as being the best Nero d'Avola on the island. And perhaps therefore the best in the world..!!
